Add road salt and clay soil that holds water, and a concrete driveway in Toronto that was not built properly simply does not last.

What's included in a new concrete driveway

• Tear-out and disposal. We remove the old asphalt or concrete and haul it away.
• Excavation and base. We dig to proper depth and compact a granular base so the slab sits on solid ground, not soft clay.
• Forms and grading. We set forms and slope the pour so water runs away from your foundation and toward the street.
• Reinforcement. Wire mesh or rebar where the site calls for it.
• Air-entrained concrete. An exterior-rated mix that stands up to freeze-thaw cycles and salt.
• Control joints and finish. Joints cut in the right places to manage cracking, with a broom finish for grip or another finish if you prefer.
• Curing guidance. Clear instructions on when you can walk on it, when you can park on it, and how to care for it in year one.

Concrete driveways for Toronto lots and Toronto winters

Older Toronto neighbourhoods bring their own challenges. Century semis in the east end often share a mutual drive barely wide enough for a car, with the house wall on one side and a fence on the other. There is no room for big machinery in there, so we bring compact equipment and do the tight sections by hand. Corner lots and newer builds have the opposite problem, longer pours that need well-placed joints and consistent finishing to read as one clean surface.

Winter is the real test of any driveway in this city. Toronto swings through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles each season, and the clay under much of the city holds water right where it does the most damage. That is why we compact a proper granular base for drainage, pour an air-entrained exterior mix and cut control joints where the slab wants to crack anyway.
