The mix we pour is air-entrained, which gives freezing water microscopic room to expand without breaking the concrete. And we cut control joints at sensible spacing, so the small shrinkage cracks every slab develops run along straight, tidy lines instead of wandering across the surface.

Finish matters too. Most patios get a broom finish, a light texture that adds grip when the surface is wet. Once the pour is down, curing does the rest.
