A front porch works harder than almost any other concrete on your property. It takes foot traffic every day, catches water off the roofline, and gets a dose of salt all winter long. When the surface starts flaking or the slab starts to lean, the whole house looks tired from the curb. We build and repair concrete porches across the GTA, and we handle them the same way we handle every job. Straight answers, careful prep and a clean site when we leave.

Some porches need a full tear-out and a new pour. Plenty of others just need a proper resurfacing or a repair at the worst spots. We will tell you plainly which one you are looking at, because new concrete over a failed base wastes your money, and replacing a slab that only needed an overlay wastes even more. Working on a house inside the city? Our concrete porch page for Toronto covers the details that come with older city homes and tight lots.

What's included in our concrete porch service

Every porch is a little different, but a typical job covers the full scope from tear-out to sealing:

  • Removal and disposal of the old slab or failed topping
  • Base preparation with compacted granular fill so the new slab has solid footing
  • Forming and reinforcement sized to your porch, not a one-size template
  • Air-entrained concrete mixed to stand up to freeze-thaw cycles
  • Finishing your way, broom texture for grip or a smooth trowelled face
  • Control joints, edging and sealing so the surface sheds water instead of drinking it

Repair, resurface or rebuild?

The right call depends on what the slab is doing underneath the surface. Thin flaking, called scaling, is usually a surface problem. If the base is sound, we grind the old face clean, apply a bonding agent and trowel on a cement-based overlay that cures into a tough new wearing surface. Wide cracks, sinking toward the house or crumbling edges are a different story. Those point to base failure, and the honest fix is a rebuild.

Watch for these signs that your porch needs attention:

  • Surface flaking or pitting that gets worse each spring
  • Cracks wide enough to catch a coin, or cracks that keep growing
  • A slab that slopes back toward the foundation and pools water
  • Hollow sounds when you tap the surface, a sign the topping has let go
  • Broken corners and edges where the salt hits hardest

Porches rarely stand alone. Most meet a set of concrete steps, and the two should be planned together so the finish matches and the top riser lands at the right height. If you have been thinking about a concrete patio out back, doing it in the same visit usually saves money because the crew and the concrete are already there. And where the porch meets the house, we can patch any damaged parge coat while we are at it. See our parging repair service for how that works.

Concrete porch questions, answered

Often, yes. If the slab underneath is sound and has not settled, we grind the surface, apply a bonding agent and finish it with a cement-based overlay that cures into a tough new face. If the slab is cracked through, sinking or breaking up at the edges, a rebuild is the better spend. We will tell you honestly which one your porch needs.
You can usually walk on it after 24 to 48 hours. Concrete keeps gaining strength for about 28 days, so keep heavy planters and furniture off it for the first week. We also recommend skipping de-icing salt for the first winter, and we leave you simple care instructions after the pour.
That flaking is called scaling, and it usually comes from freeze-thaw cycles working on a weak surface layer that then gets hit with salt. Water soaks into the top of the slab, freezes, and pops the surface off. An air-entrained mix, proper curing and a quality sealer are how we keep it from happening to the new work.
Small porches and landings close to grade usually do not need one, but rules vary by municipality and by the height of the finished porch. If your project sits higher off the ground or involves new railings, a permit can come into play. We flag anything like that during the quote so there are no surprises.
Yes. We can match broom finishes, edge details and colour tone so the porch blends in with the concrete around it. If the steps are on their way out too, it is usually cheaper to do both at once. Ask us to price it both ways in your free quote.
